What Reiki Is and Is Not

Reiki (pronounced "ray kee") energy resides in every one of us.  Each of us can learn to use this abundant life force as a relaxation technique, to reduce stress and to promote general well-being.  Not only can the Reiki practitioner use this loving energy for his or her own self-improvement but also in helping others while never depleting his or her own energy.

Although Reiki is not a substitute for conventional medicine, it never does harm and is used in conjunction with many medical modalities.  Reiki practitioners are found in hospitals, cancer clinics, wellness centers, hospice agencies, nursing homes, pain clinics and in private practice.

Reiki is not a religion.

Reiki energy is very powerful, very nurturing, and brings a sense of peace to the stressful issues we all are confronted with in our daily lives.

Reiki Fundamentals

Rediscovered and techniques/usages structured by Sensei Mikao Usui in the early 1900s, Reiki is the use of Universal energy, or life force, to aid in relaxation and healing and to promote general well-being.   While this Universal energy is present in us and all around us and we all have the capability to call upon it, Reiki techniques and teachings are traditionally passed from Master to student.  What are known as “attunements” are performed by the Master during class, awakening the Reiki capabilities within the student.   Think of turning on a tap and allowing the water to flow through the faucet.  During the attunements, the student’s Reiki “tap” is turned on and the Reiki energy begins to flow.

Once you have received the attunements, Reiki stays with you your entire life.  The more you use it, the stronger it will become.

How Does It Work?

Reiki can be performed hands-on or in the recipient’s energy field.  The energy flows through the practitioner’s hands to the recipient.  Working in conjunction with the recipient's chakras (energy centers of the body), Reiki can also be focused on specific areas to help reduce discomfort.  The Reiki practitioner can also perform Reiki on oneself, making it a tool of empowerment for those with chronic pain, cancer patients and the like.

How Does It Feel?

Reiki energy recipients feel the warmth from my hands when placed on the body.  I’ve been told my hands feel like small heating pads!  The energy recipient typically feels relaxed; it is not unusual for clients to “cat nap” during a session.  Those are typical reactions; however, everyone experiences the energy differently.

Although Reiki is not a religion, many clients and students find it to be quite a spiritual experience.
